PHDH904 Health promotion and coping

Course description for academic year 2020/2021

Contents and structure

The course presents key perspectives in health promotion such as salutogenesis, empowerment, and health literacy, and how health promotion skills can be promoted by supporting individuals to apply their own knowledge and skills about what promotes their health and coping. The course focuses on identifying resources and room for action in given situations or contexts, and on raising awareness and using them to promote health and coping. Equality, equal opportunities and social responsibility are linked to different approaches and research questions. Various methodological research approaches to increase knowledge in health promotion and coping are critically discussed.

  • is in the knowledge front when it comes to various health promotion theories and concepts, and has an understanding of health as an interdisciplinary area of knowledge
  • is in the knowledge front when it comes to different coping theories
  • can assess the appropriateness and application of various methods in research related to the field of health promotion and coping
  • has advanced knowledge of factors that promote and inhibit person-centered and active learning processes related to health
  • has extensive knowledge of areas and factors that can promote coping and health in various contexts

Skills:

The student ...

  • is able to problematize existing theory and practice in health promotion and coping, and identify knowledge gaps
  • has integrated knowledge and understanding at ontological and epistemological level for how health promotion can be the main focus of research
  • can formulate issues and plan research related to health promotion and coping
  • can handle complex knowledge issues and challenges and further develop established knowledge and practices in health promotion and coping

General competence:

The student ...

  • can identify inequalities in health and show ethical awareness and social responsibility when it comes to approaches to health promotion and coping
  • can identify and analyze important and relevant research ethical issues with a focus on health promotion and coping
  • can initiate interdisciplinary research and development projects and quality assurance work related to health promotion and coping
  • can disseminate research and development work to various target groups such as professionals, students and the general public

Teaching methods

Seminars on campus with lectures, tutorials, group work and plenary presentations.

Tentative workload

Resource lecture / interactive learning: 20 hours

Plenary presentation and evaluation: 10 hours

Home assignment (essay writing): 35 hours

Home assignment: 3 days

Grading Pass / fail

If failing to pass, a second exam date allows for an improved version of the essay to be handed-in.
