Course description for academic year 2020/2021
Contents and structure
English 2, first part, builds on English 1 and allows for the development of specialization and training in language teaching. The course provides a deeper knowledge of the grammatical and phonetic structure of English. Proficiency in spoken and written English is further developed along with productive vocabulary skills. The various aspects of English teaching for School Years 5-10, and particularly the problematic transition between the levels, should be central. The course provides further insight into different inspirational and motivating methods for the teaching and learning of a language.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
Students have knowledge of:
- the nuances of the sounds of English, along with its grammatical structure and how vocabulary can be developed
- the historical development of different methods and approaches to English language education
- how oral and written language can be integrated into inspiring and meaningful activities
- the processes of reading and writing
- how different factors can promote the learning of English
- different ways of organizing the teaching of language
- the national school curriculum and how it acts as a framework for professional development
- some varieties of English
- how to guide and assist their own pupils in taking care of their own long-term development and learning of Language.
Skills:
Students can:
- use the target language safely and competently
- plan, implement and evaluate teaching sessions to take into account the diversity of the cultural and language backgrounds of the student group
- adapt their teaching to suit the individual student´s needs by the selection and use of diverse and differentiated learning activities that promote the development of pupils receptive and productive language skills. Be able to use digital media as appropriate
- use oral activities as a starting point for written exercises and written material to promote oral language development
- raise the awareness of their pupils in processes linked to reading and writing and how these can be used as strategies for their own learning
- guide pupils in the creation of oral, written and mixed media texts that are fluent, precise and coherent
- guide pupils in their own choice of learning strategy
- actively make use of pupils´ experience with English and other languages, to promote further language learning
- work independently on issues within language teaching
- assess pupils´ work with and without grading and justify the assessment
- can select and organize work with texts from a variety of English speaking countries, suitable for children and young people and present them in varied, challenging and inspiring ways

Students:

Teaching methods
Different working methods are used, dependent upon the material being taught and that fit with good practice for School Years 5-10. This goes for both theoretical and practical elements of the course

- English used as the language of delivery in the classroom
- Problem solving exercises in groups or individually
- Practical work with activities
- Teacher and student- led exercises
- Students will work with different practical exercises throughout the study time
- Guidance - both individually and in groups
- Language laboratory:Language practice
- Information Technology - ICT:ICT is used as the means of delivering information to the students and a means of communication between students and staff. ICT is an integrated part of the work on the course and is used where it is appropriate
Compulsory learning activities
In order to qualify for the written exam in phonetics and linguistics, a written assignment in phonetics needs to be passed.

Written exam: Language, 6 hours. Weighting: 60 %
Portfolio: Didactics. Weighting: 40 %
