Contents and structure

The course starts with an introduction to cartography concepts of map construction and map projections. This includes 3 practical exercises in the use of map and compass as well as basic map reading skills in both analogue and digital maps. The GIS part of the course introduces principles behind vector and raster-based GIS, as well as applications of these. Thematic maps and spatial analyses are introduced through exercises drawing on natural sciences, especially in the context of planning.
