NAB1024 Maritime English

Contents and structure

This course serves to extend the student's knowledge, skills and competences that are necessary to communicate in English between vessels and coast facilities, as well as intraship and intership communication.

These competences are required in order to carry out duties and work on board a ship in a professional and safe manner.

The course serves to extend the students' knowledge, understanding and proficiency in order to comply with IMO STCW requirements.

The oral exam might be carried out both during daytime and in the evenings.

Learning Outcome

 - Knowledge:

The students should know the maritime English standard vocabulary used in internal and external communication onboard. They should be able to communicate efficiently and without misunderstandings by using the maritime standard vocabulary when communicating with persons of a different native language. The students should be comfortable when communicating in English during different operational situations, both during normal daily operations and extraordinary situations such as emergencies.

 

- Skills:

The students should be able to use English related to operation of a vessel. They should be able to use English as primary means of communication in a maritime environment and use English vocabulary and grammar correctly. They should be able to use the maritime standard vocabulary during an operation, e.g. mooring, cargo handling or other onboard operations, both when communicating with the vessel's crew and with external personnel.

 

- General Qualifications:

The students should be able to perform their work onboard a vessel where the working language is English. They should be able to exchange opinions and experiences in English within a maritime environment. They should be confident in communicating in English and be able to capture possible misunderstandings where such can arise as a consequence of inadequate language skills of others. This course meets the relevant requirements of STCW 78 as amended, table A-II/1.

 Lectures and individual guidance.

Compulsory learning activities

Three assignments. All assignments must be completed.

• Assignment 1 - A recorded presentation
• Assignment 2 - An online questionnaire
• Assignment 3 - A written report and voice records of maritime communication

Assessment

Oral examination. Consist of an oral presentation followed by a face-to-face question & answer session.

The oral exam might be carried out both during daytime and in the evenings.
