SYKSB3001 Nursing, Research, and Professional Development (Bachelor Thesis)

Contents and structure

The bachelor's thesis is written individually. The student works over time on a topic of his or her choice that is relevant in terms of the nurse's function and tasks in society. In the course, 5 credits are related to literature studies of the professional and scientific basis of nursing, and 7 credits are related to literature studies of the nursing profession and the basis of occupation. 

 

Contents from the Professional and Scientific Basis of Nursing (5 credits)

The professional and scientific basis in nursing encompasses knowledge from patient's/user's perspective, and research-based and experience-based knowledge. The course aims at enabling the student to develop and reflect on professional judgement and the basic values of nursing. The student should assess the profession and practice of occupation critically and constructively from a patient's/user's perspective, and in a historical, national and global perspective. The student should work independently, produce new knowledge and, if feasible, implement the bachelor's thesis in connection with ongoing R&D work at HSH.

Contents from the Nursing Profession and its Occupational Basis (7 credits)

The topic in a bachelor's thesis in nursing is related to a clinical subject area within practical training in nursing, i.e. themes and problems are relevant and justified within the field of nursing. Central topics entail nursing in the municipal and specialist health services, and the nurse's responsibility for practice of professional justifiable and considerate nursing of patient and user groups.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student:

• has knowledge of the tradition and work ethics of the nursing profession as well as theories and concepts of nursing.
• has knowledge of philosophy of science, research methods and research ethics in nursing.
• has knowledge of the position of professional nursing and the nurse's function and tasks in the municipal and specialist health services.  

 Skills:

The student:

• is able to implement systematic literature searches.
• is able to utilise nursing theory in order to shed light on and understand various patient situations.
• is able to make his or her own ehtical considerations in utilising nursing research.
• is able to account for the method and result of the bachelor's thesis.
• is able to use research results and other health professional literature in discussions of relevant problems in connection with professional nursing.
• is able to critically assess research results in connection with improvement of nursing practice.

 

General Qualifications:

The student:

• is able to reflect with a basis in professional nursing and ethics regarding problems for discussion derived from everyday practice rooted in the basic theory, research and his or her own experiences from practical training of professional nursing.
• is able to impart the nurse's function and tasks in society and contribute to sound practice and knowledge.
• is able to contribute to professional development as well as quality development in establishing coherent nursing that ensures sound patient care pathways.

Entry requirements

Passed subjects SYKSB/SYKHB 1021, 1031, 1022, 1032, 2023, 2033 og 2041. In addition, at least 4 practical periods must be passed. Approved compulsory work related to SYKSB 3001.

Teaching methods

The student works independently with the thesis. The student is allocated a tutor and a limited number of hours for individual tutorials. Some of the tutorials are obligatory. The student makes sure he or she is prepared for tutorials, and written material should be dispatched to tutor prior to the meeting.

The Bachelor's Thesis is a Written Work Based on:

Literature studies with presentation of research literature and other current health professional literature related to a basic professional problem for discussion in clinical practice.

The bachelor's thesis is written according to the current guidelines for bachelor's thesis in nursing at Campus Stord.

Compulsory learning activities

Compulsory work, will be specified in the semester plan.

If there are students who will do a new ordinary / new examination with a new class, it must be assessed by the course coordinator / head of studies if previously completed coursework requirements still apply for them.

Assessment

Bachelor thesis. Graded marks

If the bachelor's thesis get the grade failed, the student can submit an improved version of the former bachelor work, once.
