BIO150 Practical Training in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

The course consist of three months practical training at medical laboratories in Bergen (Haraldsplass Diaconess Universitu Hospital and Haukeland University Hospital). The placement will cover hematology, clinical chemistry, histology, cytology and microbiology.

Guided practical training in medical laboratories four (4) days each week during the period of 3 months. One (1) study day every week.

Learning Outcome

On completion of this topic the student will be able to:

Knowledge:

  • Explain the principle and clinical meanings of the selected analyzes and techniques
  • Describe the theoretical natural-science basis for the analyzes, including quality assurance and safety aspects

Skills:

  • Carry out the most central analyzes in the laboratories with good laboratory standards
  • Handle the equipment and device used in the laboratories
  • Validate results

General competence:

  • Reflect on their professional practice in an interdisciplinary context
  • Reflect on personal development, including ethical awareness

Entry requirements

All exams from second year of the Bachelor program have to be passed.

Target group is Students in the 3rd year of a Bachelor degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science from collaborating institutions (maximum 4 students).

Teaching methods

  • Hands on work in the laboratory under the guidance of a trained BMS
  • Group work and reflections based on logbooks
  • Seminars

Course period is 3 months, starting with the 'welcome week' for all international students at HVL in August.

Compulsory learning activities

Mandatory work requirements:

  • 4 logbooks
  • 1 oral presentation

Assessment

Evaluation of the student`s performance of practical period according to given criteria.

Grading: Pass/Failed
