MAS307 Hydrogen technology

Course description for academic year 2021/2022

Contents and structure

In a world making the transition from fossil energy sources towards the use of renewable energy, hydrogen is becoming more and more interesting as an energy carrier. This course covers production, distribution and use of hydrogen, for example in fuel cells. The focus is on technology, but relevant interdisciplinary considerations are also included to present a holistic picture.

  • Methods for hydrogen production, such as steam reforming, pyrolysis, biomass gasification and electrolysis
  • Storage and distribution on land and at sea
  • Use as an energy carrier and in industrial processes, including fuel cells
  • Value chains and economics in hydrogen projects
  • Safety when operating hydrogen plants - laws and regulations in Norway

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the class MAS307, the student will have the following qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Can explain the most important methods within hydrogen production, distribution, and consumption
  • Knows current Norwegian regulations and laws within safety for hydrogen plants

Abilities:

  • Can perform overall energy calculations regarding the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier
  • Can assess hydrogen as an energy carrier against alternative solutions in energy projects

General competence:

  • Can reflect on own professional practice
  • Can collaborate in a group to solve a task
  • Can give an oral presentation of subject matter

Entry requirements

None

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic chemistry and thermodynamics

Teaching methods

Lectures, self-study, exercises, group work, project assignment and presentation. Excursions if possible. A project assignment with specialization within a topic from the class is carried out as group work.

Compulsory learning activities

No later than 2 weeks before the submission of the project assignment, a workshop is held in which the whole class participates. All groups present their assignments. Each group gets 30 minutes for a presentation and up to 10 minutes with questions and feedback from the class. Everyone in the group must participate in the presentation. It is mandatory for everyone in the class to attend the workshop.

3 mandatory work requirements are linked to the group work:

  • participation in group work
  • participation in a workshop with an oral presentation
  • attendance at all presentations at the workshop

The work requirements must be completed by set deadlines and approved before one can take the exam. The work requirements are valid for totally four (4) semesters.

Assessment

  1. Oral exam, 30 minutes. Counts 50%.
  2. Project assignment. Counts 50%.

Time and place for the exam will be confirmed on the course's learning platform.

Grade scale A-F, where F corresponds to failed.

A new oral exam will be arranged at the beginning of the following semester if not passed.

Both parts must be passed to pass the whole course. Grades from both parts are stored so that in the event of a failure in one part, it is only necessary to take a new exam in the part in which the student has failed.
