NAB3006 Coastal Navigation for Cadet PEC
Course description for academic year 2021/2022
Contents and structure
This course has a focus on coastal navigation along the coast of Norway. The foundation of this course is a model course approved by Kystverket.
There will be a course fee. Further information will be given.
Learning Outcome
- Knowledge:
- The students should be able to describe regulations for maritime marking, light house characters and information found in navigational charts.
- Skills:
- The students should be able to connect bearings, radar, ECDIS, maritime markings, passing distance and parallel indexes to coastal navigation.
- General Qualifications:
- The students should be able to plan and execute a coastal voyage on simulator.
Entry requirements
NAB1026 Navigasjon I, NAB1027 Navigasjon II og NAB2014 Navigasjon III og equivalent.
Note: This course has a limited number of places available and is open for 3rd year students only with normal study progression. If the number of applicants is higher than the number of places, ranking of applicants will be done on the basis of the average grade achieved in the courses which are defined as required prerequisite courses.
Teaching methods
Lectures and simulator exercises.
Compulsory learning activities
100 % attendance in mandatory exercises.
Note: The students will not be able to attend the mandatory exercises unless they have acquired the following charts: 21 and 23, fully updated.
Assessment
Practical/oral exam. Passed/failed.
Note: The exam consists of two phases, planning of a voyage, and implementation of the planned voyage in the simulator. If the candidate doesn't pass the planning phase, the candidate has failed the exam.
