MSB207 Statistics and research ethics

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

The students will learn how different types of knowledge and questions might be addressed via different quantitative methods. The course will provide the students with a multiple of quantitative methods and provide them with adequate knowledge of the ethical dilemmas often faced by researchers at different stages of the research process.   

Learning Outcome

Knowledge 

Upon completion of the course, the student: 

  • has advanced knowledge about quantitative research strategies.   
  • has advanced knowledge of relevant methods of data collection
  • has advanced knowledge of quantitative statistical analysis.
  • has knowledge of the ethical dilemmas often faced by researchers     

 

Skills 

Upon completion of the course, the student can: 

  • justify appropriate research designs for quantitative research projects. 
  • conduct analysis using quantitative research methods. 
  • interpret output from statistical analysis. 

 

General Competence 

Upon completion of the course, the student can: 

  • read, assess and use knowledge published in scientific literature. 
  • participate in large-scale research projects. 
  • participate in consultancy work in the areas like marketing strategies, innovation networks and consumer choice, when use of quantitative methods is a vital element. 
  • analyze relevant ethical problems in research.

Teaching methods

The teaching sessions consist of lectures and practice in datalab. Self-study and practice in the datalab are important elements of the course.  

Compulsory learning activities

Mandatory assignment (arbeidskravet) consists of one written assignment made in groups of maximum two students. The mandatory assignment must be approved before the student is entitled to appear in the final exam.

Assessment

Exam: 

Individual written exam, 4 hours 

Grading scale is A-F were F is fail.
