SYKH330P Practice Study, Nursing under Mental Health Disorder/Illness

Contents and structure

This module is a supervised clinical placement which covers patient-centred nursing for patients with mental health conditions/illnesses. Students use the nursing process in their nursing practice, with a specific focus on health promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in interaction with patients, relatives and other health professionals.

Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary collaboration, principles of environmental therapy, patient safety, service user participation and professional leadership.

This module also includes the following topics:

• Documentation and journal systems
• Relevant regulatory requirements with a specific focus on coercion
• Drug handling and calculation

The expected study time for this module is around 405 hours. 270 of these hours are connected to direct patient-facing work. The remaining hours are allocated for compulsory learning activities (coursework) and self-study.

90% participation is required for this module.

• will be able to use subject knowledge of health and illness alongside mental health conditions to systematically observe, assess, implement and document appropriate nursing measures, as well as evaluate the effect of these and make adjustments as necessary
• will be able to use subject knowledge to initiate and contribute to interdisciplinary, interprofessional and cross-sectoral collaboration to ensure a coordinated, comprehensive and coherent course of treatment across providers and levels
• will be able to assess situations which could potentially endanger patients, relatives and staff, and put in place measures to prevent such incidents
• will be able to reflect on and handle professional, ethical and legal issues in line with relevant legislation and guidelines, and adjust their practice in the course of their provision of services
• will be able to use interpersonal, communicative and supervisory competence when meeting with service users, patients and relatives
• will be able to use knowledge of outreach, treatment and following up to support the patient's decision making
• will be able to use up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations and guidance documents in their nursing practice

• will have an understanding of the development and use of technology and digital solutions on both individual and system levels in the health service
• will be able to plan and implement sound drug handling and calculation, and quality assure the individual patient's use of medication
• will be able to plan and implement communication and interaction with patients and relatives based on respect, cooperation and integrity
• will be able to plan and implement targeted collaboration processes with patients/service users, relatives and other service providers, and will be able to prevent and resolve conflicts
• will be able to plan and implement measures to ensure the safe transfer of patients between different units and levels of the health service
• will be able to plan and implement service development in collaboration with patients and relatives
• will be able to convey, both orally and in writing, subject knowledge and relevant results from research and development work covering theoretical and practical issues, and will be able to justify choices in line with knowledge-based practice

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be completed before students can begin any direct patient-facing work:

1: Compulsory participation in teaching related to practice preparation, skills training and simulation.
2: Individual written drug calculation test (must be 100% correct) (belongs to SYK320P or SYK330P)

Completed coursework is valid for four semesters. A student who does not pass their coursework will be moved down a year, and their individual education plan will be adjusted.

Assessment

Clinical placements are assessed on a pass/fail basis after a final assessment of the candidate’s performance during their clinical placement. To pass their placements, students must have reached their learning outcomes and met the requirement of 90% participation in the course.

Resitting placements
If a student does not pass their placement, they will complete the placement period with the next year group.
