SYKH360P Practice Study, Professional Management, Service Development and Innovation

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

This module is a supervised clinical placement in which students will acquire insight into a nurse's functions related to professional leadership, service development and innovation in health services. This insight will allow students to critically assess, prioritise and justify nursing and organisational measures on both individual and system levels. Students will be able to identify a need for interprofessional service collaboration, professional leadership and coordination, documentation and information transfer to maintain and ensure quality of service. Students will be able to use this knowledge in a quality development, improvement or innovation project.   

This module can be carried out in either the municipal or specialist health service.

The expected study time for this module is around 202.5 hours. 150 of these hours are connected to direct patient-facing work. The remaining hours are allocated for compulsory learning activities and self-study. 90% participation is required for this module.

Skills:
The student...

  • will be able to use knowledge of teaching and change processes in the supervision and education of students and relevant health professionals
  • will be able to use up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations and guidance documents in their provision of services
  • will be able to reflect on existing routines and methods, and will be able to initiate dialogues about the implementation of new knowledge and new methods of working
  • will be able to find and assess risk factors for a system or an environment, as well as document, systematically follow up, and implement relevant measures
  • will have mastered mapping, assessment, documentation and communication tools in their nursing practice

General competence:
The student...

  • will be able to manage and prioritise nursing tasks
  • will have an insight into the quality of the nursing and services that patients and service users receive, and will be able to adjust their own professional practice
  • will have an insight into how technology and digital solutions influence provision of service
  • will be able to plan and implement targeted measures to reduce unwanted incidents and variations in the health service
  • will be able to plan and implement quality development work in collaboration with other health professionals
  • will be able to convey, both orally and in writing, subject knowledge and relevant results from research and development work covering theoretical and practical issues, and will be able to make choices in line with knowledge-based practice
  • will be able to convey opinions and share experiences with others in the field, both orally and in writing, and through this contribute to the development of best practice
  • will be familiar with quality challenges on a systemic and/or task level which need innovation

Assessment

Clinical placements are assessed on a pass/fail basis after a final assessment of the candidate’s performance during their clinical placement. To pass their placements, students must have reached their learning outcomes and met the requirement of 90% participation in the course.

Resitting placements
If a student does not pass their placement, they will complete the placement period with the next year group.
