BIO202 Pathology
Course description for academic year 2022/2023
Contents and structure
The course covers disease processes and how diseases alters cells and tissues. It also gives an overview of basic working methods in todays pathologic-anatomic diagnostics. The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge within pathology, regarding changes in cells and tissues (cytology/histology), as well as molecules (molecular pathology), due to disease, and be able to detect such by proper handling of tissue/sample, and evaluate the quality of histological tissue sections, cytological sample preparations, and molecular markers.
Content
• General disease processes, hereby i.e. circulatory/respiratory failure, infections and immunological processes and tumor disease.
• Cell/tissue changes by infections and cancer development
• Sampling procedure and sample treatment of cytological and histological samples, including pre-analytical conditions, color techniques, and quality of sections/samples
• Cytology by screening procedures, diagnostic criteria and quality assurance measures.
• Review of the most frequently used techniques for light-/fluoresence microscopy, immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the subject BIO202, the student will have the following learning outcomes defined by knowledge, skills and general competency
Knowledge:
Student
• Can describe general disease processes
• Has knowledge of methods, laboratory equipment and tasks relating to the biomedical laboratory scientist within histopathology, cytology and molecular pathology
• Can explain how analytical, pre- and postanalytical conditions can affect analytical results
• Knows how cells and tissue structures are analyzed as part of diagnostics, follow up and treatment of disease in organs of the body.
• Can explain internal quality controls and systems to ensure analysis monitoring and reliable analytical results.
• Knows about the pipeline of a sample through the laboratory, requisition and communication system for response, automation systems.
Skills:
Student
• Can apply analytical instruments and laboratory equipment used within histopathology and molecular pathology
• Can master methods for handling human biological material and basic laboratory techniques for biomedical laboratory scientist work in a structured and accurate way, and according to applicable laws and regulations.
• Can evaluate internal and external quality control data results.
• Can evaluate sample data results, method possibilities, limitations and source of error.
General competency
Student
• Can reflect over own area of competency and professional practice, seek and accept supervisional quidance.
• Can interpret an order and disseminate sample results both written and orally
• Can work both individually and in groups.
• Has understanding and skills in sample treatment, insight into screening procedures, diagnostic criteria and quality assurance matters.
• Can document and convey knowledge relating to a biomedical laboratory scientist through oral and written presentations in Norwegian.
Entry requirements
Consistent with the demands for uptake second study year as defined in the study plan for the biomedical laboratory scientist education.
Recommended previous knowledge
BIO173 Organic chemistry and biochemistry
BIO174 Cell biology
Teaching methods
Physical and digital teaching, eCase-study and quiz. Supervision of practical laboratory work and reports based on such.
Compulsory learning activities
Problem-based learning (eCase-study)
Laboratory course (only one laboratory course will be set up pr course). Students who are absent or for other reasons do not get approved laboratory course will there for not be able to retake the laboratory course that same semester. The student only gets 2 tries in one laboratory course, in total (not within same semester)
