LEI107 Engineering Surveying
Course description for academic year 2022/2023
Contents and structure
This course provides an introduction to basic geodesy, and focuses further on the analysis of surveyed data and the estimation of coordinates. This unit also aims to give an understanding of modern methods used to plan and perform surveying tasks in which the engineer plays a part. Suitability of surveying methods as well as data quality and precision will be emphasized in order to fulfil customer requirements.
Contents
Basic geodesy, datum, projections, transformations, networks, parameter and error estimation, propagation of errors, hypothesis testing, rejection of data, reliability analysis, surveying- and stakeout techniques, volume-, area- and mass calculation, simple programming/scripting, reporting and achievement of objectives according to relevant standards.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
- Describe basic concepts of geodesy.
- Describe characteristic properties of relevant datum and projection systems.
- Explain and evaluate the results of an adjustment computation.
- Describe basic geodetic tasks for the civil engineering professional.
Skills
- Plan simple surveying and stakeout tasks according to accuracy demands.
- Estimate coordinates and heights based on collected data by least squares estimation.
- Estimate accuracy and evaluate the results according to achievement of objective.
General Competence
The student shall demonstrate a basic understanding of planning, execution and calculation of simple surveying and stakeout tasks where high precision and accuracy is vital for the result.
Entry requirements
None
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge corresponding or similar to BYG102 Statistics and Land Surveying.
Teaching methods
Lectures, excises and practical field work.
Compulsory learning activities
Mandatory fieldwork and five mandatory assignments in the form of written reports.
The assignments must be submitted within set deadlines and must be approved before examination can take place.
Approved assignments are valid in three subsequent semesters.
Assessment
4 hour written exam.
Time and place for the examination will be announced at Studentweb and digital assessment system.
The examination is digital and the students bring their own computer. The software used for the examination must be installed and tested by the student before the examination.
Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
In case of new exam (outside of ordinary), or if there are few registered students, the exam could be oral.
Examination support material
All digital, printed and handwritten notes are allowed. The students use their own computer and calculator on the examination.
