MOØ234 Innovation Management in Corporate Business

Course description for academic year 2022/2023

Contents and structure

The course consists of two interrelated parts. One part of the course introduces students to "Corporate Startup" thinking in established organizations, and how they can benefit from collaboration with external startups to build an Innovation Ecosystem. Both face new challenges to be able to benefit from the transition from "The Age of Innovation" to "The Age of Collaboration".

The other part focuses on innovation in established firms and introduces students to current theories and models of innovation strategies, innovation management, innovation practices and characteristics of sustainable innovative organizations. The course provides students with knowledge, skills, methods, and tools to analyze, and actively participate and contribute to innovation processes in both private and public organizations.

In addition, the course focuses on the trade-offs between "exploration and exploitation" to achieve viable business models.

Learning Outcome

The course will prepare and encourage students to become more aware of different sustainable innovative models and practises.

 

Knowledge based learning outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge of

  • innovation management theories, strategies, and business models
  • how to create-test-learn and scale and grow business ideas from exploration vs exploitation phases to innovation ecosystems
  • different types of collaborations between established organizations and startups
  • innovation accounting
  • sustainability as a new paradigm for innovation and competitive advantage

Skill based learning outcomes

Students will acquire

  • ability to assess options and develop relevant strategies and methods for successful innovation in existing organizations
  • ability to apply a business model canvas for continuously improving and renewing business models
  • skills in applying tools and worksheets to analysis and evaluate improvements in different innovation portfolios
  • ability to specify relevant metrics and track key performance indicators
  • team-based experiences being members of project groups

 General competences 

Students will acquire a roadmap for creating a strategy, governance structure and implementing an innovation practice in organizations. They will be able to evaluate new business ideas and understand how existing organizations can improve innovations by understanding and appreciating the importance of an ecosystem-innovation approach.  The course will provide useful answers and solutions to the complex question: how corporates can innovate faster and better.

Admission requirements for the master programme (MIL).

Teaching methods

After an introductory presentation given by teachers and guest-lecturers, students continuously write on their group-based semester assignment. Methods applied: lectures, quest lectures, videos, student’s presentations, case examples and open discussions. Teachers will give oral and/or written feedback on drafts and parts of written hand-ins throughout the course.

Compulsory learning activities

Students are required to:

1) Work in small groups writing their semester paper, in which they apply the theoretical framework of Innovation Ecosystem by analyzing an organization by their own choice.

2)  Hand-in two preliminary versions of their papers. These mandatory submissions must be approved before handing in their final term papers. 

3) Hand in the final submission of their semester paper. The paper must be approved in order for the student to do the exam. 

Assessment

An oral exam. 

Time and place announced in Canvas.

Grading scale is A-F, where F is fail.
