ØKB3131 Project leadership and management
Course description for academic year 2023/2024
Contents and structure
The course gives an introduction in project management and evaluation. Basic concepts, theories and tools are reviewed. The students receive an overview of and insight into how projects are produced in an uncertain and complex reality with many stakeholders and constant change. Central themes amongst others are value creation, participation, management, learning, innovation, sustainability and digitalization.
Evaluation of project is also a focus in the course. Many projects do not achieve their project goals as intended. Evaluation of projects can result in learning and how to avoid similar problems in the future. The course introduces evaluation methods and practices used in large projects initiated by the Norwegian government, and which are also recommended by the EU commission, OECD an UN.
The student´s project assignment is a central part of the course. Working on the project offers a practical application of theories and tool and experience with real project work. The final project report gives the opportunity to develop skills in academic writing.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student will acquire knowledge of concepts and theories within:
- Value creation and goal achievement in projects
- Planning activities included developing the project scope, stakeholder analysis and determining strategies and objectives
- Organizing, teamwork and management of projects
- The project process, project control, uncertainty and complexity
- Learning, innovation and sustainability
- Evaluation of projects, including methods and practices
Skills:
After completing the course, the student possesses practical skills on how to:
- Plan and follow through projects
- Describe and analyze differ types of projects
- Describe and discuss actions that promotes value creation in projects
- Analyze profitability, risks and do network planning
- Evaluate projects to promote learning and improvement
General competence:
After completing the course, the student will have:
- Experience on working independently and in a group
- Ability to impart knowledge in writing
- Ability to reflection projects, their characteristics and role in the society

BØA112 Organization and management or real-world experience (a basic understanding of and insight into the field of organization and management)
