Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

This course introduces Dance as physical, cultural and aesthetic activity. The student will gain experience with basic components of dancing and movement work and will learn of the many cultural contexts. Some of its creative potential is introduced. You will learn of presentation and performance qualities in the artform.

Students with significant experience in dance may be asked to pass on some of their knowledge and skills to the rest of the class, to prepare them for the second year (the dance major subject).

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of basic elements of dancing and movement-work, including simple dance-training, learning of dancesteps- and shapes.
  • has knowledge of basic presentation and performance skills used in dance and movement-work.
  • has general knowledge of contexts of dance.

Skills

The student

  • can understand and train own body in simple dance-shapes.
  • can reflect on learning dance and movement-work and its contexts.

General competence

The student

  • can understand and learn dance-shapes and movement-work and link the information to cultural and social contexts
  • can reflect on the use of dance and movement-work for creative and communicative purposes.

Teaching methods

Practical work with the use of dance- and movement-activity, lectures, tutorials, collaborations and written assignments.

Compulsory learning activities

Material costs for this course is 300 NOK.

  • Course requirement 1: Compulsory attendance is a requirement in all music and group activities
  • Course requirement 2: Presentations of group and field work in class
  • Course requirement 3: Two written assignments, 1000 words each.

All course requirements must be passed before the final assessment

Assessment

Practical group-exam including oral examination, and individual reflection note submitted.

Grading scale: Passed/Failed.
