BYG109 Geographic Information Systems Analysis
Course description for academic year 2023/2024
Contents and structure
This course focuses on general GIS techniques with a special attention on planning and environmental issues. Students will learn to recognize when GIS should be applied to solve a particular problem.
Contents
Data capture and data availability, modelling, standards, use of SOSI data, data quality, suitability analysis, use of reference systems, handling of data errors, cartography, terrain modelling, use of laser data, use of cadastre data, analysis related to planning.
Learning Outcome
After completing this course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge
- Explain basic methods for spatial data capture in GIS and how the data could be modelled in GIS.
- Explain basic techniques for processing, analysis and visualisation of spatial data.
- Recognise tasks where GIS could be applied.
Skills
- Evaluate and apply basic GIS techniques for different tasks.
- Couple table data with geographic data.
- Perform basic analyses and present results according to cartographic methods and techniques.
General Competence
Develop a conscious and critical relationship to different techniques for presentation of geographical information. This in relation to the environmental and social challenges.

Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge corresponding or similar to LEI101 Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Teaching methods
Spring semester: gatherings.
Autumn semester: Lectures, theory and lab exercises.
Compulsory learning activities
Five mandatory assignments in the form of written reports.
The assignments must be submitted within set deadlines and must be approved before examination can take place.
Approved assignments are valid in three subsequent semesters.
Assessment
3 hour written examination.
Time and place for the examination will be announced at Studentweb and digital assessment system.
The examination is digital and the students bring their own computer. The software used for the examination must be installed and tested by the student before the examination.
Grading scale is A-F where F is fail.
