LEI117 Introduction to geomatics and geo-informatics
Course description for academic year 2023/2024
Contents and structure
The course will introduce the student to modern methods and techniques for processing spatial data, including collection, storage, retrieval, processing and visualisation. Basic programming skills are an essential part of this work.
Contents
Introduction to geomatics and geoinformatics: basic concepts, reference systems and projections, national geodata work, methods of data collection, sensors, quality concepts, spatial concepts and databases, file systems and formats, spatial data modelling, structuring, access methods, SQL, MATLAB, Python.
Programming methodology: variables, data types, operators, loops and selections, methods and functions, classes and objects, selected algorithms.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
- Define geomatics and geoinformatics and give an account of organization and applications in society.
- Describe different ways of modelling the geographical reality.
- Explain different methods for collecting, storing, and handling, as well as areas of use for geographical data.
Skills:
- Establish a storage structure for geographical data as well as insert, modify and retrieve data from databases and file systems.
- Be able to create and explain the content of simple program code as well as describe what the program code gives as a result.
General Competence:
- The candidate must demonstrate basic skills in the collection, processing, and visualization of geographical data.
- The candidate must master basic programming.

Teaching methods
Lectures, e-learning, seminar work, theory, and computer exercises.
Compulsory learning activities
5 mandatory assignments must be submitted and approved in order to take the exam. In addition students need to prepare a short presentation of a choosen GIS topic.
Approved assignments are valid for 3 semesters after approval.
Assessment
Written school exam, 4 hours.
The time and place for the exam will be announced on Studentweb and the digital exam system.
The exam will be held on a digital exam system. Students must bring their own PC/MAC. Software that is required to complete the exam must be installed and tested before the exam day.
Grade scale A-F, where F corresponds to fail.
