NABP3005 Health, working environment and safety

Contents and structure

The course deals with various aspects of health, working environment and safety on board and in the shipping companies.

The course is module-based and is organized in the following modules:

Module 1 - medical treatment: The module covers the requirement included in STCW 78 as amended, table A-VI / 4-1, 4-2. The module will enable you to practice the necessary medical treatment in connection with accidents, illness and other adverse events on board. Key topics included in module 1 are: Life-saving first aid, respiration and circulatory failure, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, head/neck/back injuries, pathology, simple surgical treatment, practical exercises/simulation in medical treatment/equipment/drug handling, monitoring and documentation .

Module 2 - working environment: The module will provide students with knowledge of the prerequisites that must be present to ensure a fully safe working environment and secure working conditions on board ships, so that physical and mental health is taken care of. The module is based on the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority's working environment model, and chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial and organizational prerequisites are reviewed in the module. The module will also give students an introduction to methods for assessing risk. Regulations on the working environment, safety and health for those of you who work on board ships (the ASH regulations) form the basis for assessing whether the working environment is in accordance with the legal requirements.

Module 3 - safety: The module will provide students with the necessary knowledge about organizational safety in the shipping companies, and insight into organizational factors that affects the safety work. Legislative requirements for the shipping companies' safety management system will be taught. Regulations on safety management systems for Norwegian ships and mobile facilities form the basis for assessing whether the safety management system is in accordance with the legal requirements. Theories and models concerning organizational safety are taught.

Learning Outcome

Module 1 - medical treatment

- Knowledge:

The student must

• be able to account for symptoms and treatment of diseases and injuries included in STCW 78 as amended, table A-VI / 4-1, 4-2
• know relevant publications and regulations.
• have developed an understanding that it can take time to bring the sick and injured to port, and must have a good knowledge of Radio Medico.

- Skills:

The student must

• be able to recognize symptoms and determine the need for medical treatment based on the symptoms.
• could provide medical treatment to the sick and injured when on board ships.
• be able to take care of patients on board, and perform treatment in line with the patient's needs.
• be able to participate in a coordinated arrangement for medical assistance to ships.
• be able to use relevant publications.

- Competence:

The student must

• have sufficient competence to have the medical responsibility on board ships in accordance with the requirements in STCW 78 as amended, table A-VI / 4-1, 4-2.
• be able to maintain the ship's hospital in line with regulatory standards and good practice.
• be able to reflect on relevant ethical issues and be able to communicate with relevant country organizations about the patient and the patient's need for further follow-up

Modules 2 and 3 - working environment and safety

-Knowledge:

Students should have knowledge of

• factors in the work environment and consequences for employees' health, well-being and welfare if they are exposed to unfortunate physical and mental strain.
• what characterizes a health-promoting workplace.
• different methods of risk analysis.
• the ASH regulations and Forskrift om sikkerhetsstyringssystem for norske skip og flyttbare innretninger's requirements and how these are to be met.
• the safety management process.
• theories and models about organizational safety.

-Skills:

Students can

• perform a work environment survey and can apply the requirements in laws and regulations, theories, processes and methods to assess factors in the work environment.
• plan and carry out a risk analysis, assess the risk and implement various measures.
• use professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work on practical issues related to the working environment and safety on board and in the shipping companies

- Competence:

Students can

• plan and carry out work operations where considerations of health, safety and risk are considered.
• contribute to the development of good work practice in a health and safety perspective.

Entry requirements

Students must have completed and passed the (NAB3014) STCW Advanced Safety Course.

Recommended previous knowledge

None.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and practical exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

100% compulsory attendance at Module 1 as well as participation in practical exercises.

Assessment

Module 1 - medical treatment: written school exam, 3 hours. Graded grade A-F. Count 35% of the total grade in the course.

Modules 2 and 3 - working environment and safety: portfolio assessment, 2 portfolio elements. Graded grade A-F. Count 65% of the total grade in the course.
