VOØ006 Human Resource Management (HRM) in the Norwegian model
Course description for academic year 2023/2024
Contents and structure
The course is anchored in and designed to support the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Decent work. The course provides basic knowledge on the responsibilities, role and tasks of the HRM function in the management and leadership of organizations in accordance with the traditions of the Norwegian model of working life. The course emphasises the requirements of the HRM function as process manager and provides knowledge on relevant methods and tools. The main focus is on the tasks that lie within the responsibility of the HRM function, contributing to organizational goal achievement based on a responsible management of human resources.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge about:
- issues, theories, methods and tools within the field of HRM and personnel management
- the role of the HR/personnel function in the organization and as contributor to the process of value creation
- sustainable management of the human resources of an organization
- the Norwegian model of working life as a framework for HRM/personnel work
- relevant laws and regulations for HRM work
- co-determination, participation and cooperation with employee representatives
- central theories, methods and tools connected to different HR-processes in an organization, including:
- recruitment
- prevention and follow-up of health problems and sick leave
- development of a safe and good working environment
- conflict management
- strategic competence development
- implementation of change and downsizing processes
Skills
The candidate can:
- apply professional knowledge on practical and theoretical issues and make well qualified decisions in her/his own work
- identify needs and be an instigator of improvements in the HRM work
- provide support and be a resource for managers, employee representatives and co-workers in the field of HRM
- contribute to efficiency, well-being and a good working environment
General competence
The candidate has competence to:
- display central academic knowledge in the field of HRM both orally and in writing
- reflect upon and analyse her/his own organization and contribute to strengthen its change competence in HRM
- identify possibilities and needs of development in her/his own organization and translate them into practical results

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions, exchange of experience, group work and individual assignments. Canvas is utilized as digital learning platform.
Compulsory learning activities
The candidate must complete one individual assignment given the evaluation approved/not approved. The assignment must be approved for the student to take his/her exam.
The course is module based in 3 weekend gatherings. A maximum of 20 % absence is allowed.
Assessment
Individual or group based semester assignment with adjusted oral examination. Grading scale is A-F, where F is fail.
