Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

  • has introductory knowledge of onboard ICT systems, including environmental requirements
  • can identify and understand the use of common technology systems on board (OT and generic ICT)
  • understands the purpose of common IT systems found on board (e.g. network switches, routers, file and email servers)
  • is aware of various paths to provide usability input
  • demonstrates a clear understanding of common security principles and how to avoid common risks of attacks and security threats
  • is aware of capabilities and limitations of automation
  • is aware of new trends such as IoT, big data, smart ships, block chain
  • understands the vital role of company policies in meeting with regulatory requirements

Skills

The student

  • can identify common systems on board (OT and generic ICT)
  • has the ability to make basic usability evaluations
  • has the ability to undertake basic threat analysis
  • has the ability to undertake basic risk analysis
  • can design risk mitigation procedures in response to risk analysis output

  • can discuss risk management and how technology risks may be incorporated into the ISM requirements
  • can provide input and feedback for updates, retrofits and new builds
  • can take part in undertaking a risk analysis and mitigation process

Recommended previous knowledge

The course is part of a specially arranged transitional arrangement from a 2-year maritime technical vocational college to a bachelor. Content and structure are based on this premise, as well as requests from representatives from the maritime industry.

Teaching methods

Session-based teaching. Lectures, flipped classroom, practical tasks and self-studies.

Semester assignment.
