Contents and structure

The course will introduce the students to fundamental topics related to the organization and management of various types of businesses. The course deals with basic concepts and theories about organization, administration, and management. It emphasizes giving students an overview of and insight into what happens in organizations, the challenges they face, and the consequences this has for individuals, organizations, and society.

Learning Outcome

A candidate must achieve the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

On completion of the course, the candidate has knowledge of concepts and theories related to:

• value creation and goal achievement in organisations
• different organizational forms and structures
• the relationship between individual, organization and surroundings
• culture, power and conflict in organisations
• communication and decisionmaking processes in organisations
• learning, innovation and change in organisations
• management in and of organizations
• legitimacy and organizations' social responsibility
• the importance of the Norwegian working life model for organization and management
• consequences of globalization and digitization for organizational forms and management

Skills

On completion of the course, the candidate can apply different academic perspectives and theoretical approaches to:

• describe how businesses function in terms of organization and management
• analyze various issues for organizations in the public and private sector
• describe, discuss and come up with measures to deal with various dilemmas and challenges that arise in organisations
• designing measures that can contribute to promoting the organisation's efficiency, legitimacy and goal attainment

General competence

Upon completion of the course, the candidate has:

• experience of working both independently and together with others in groups
• ability to convey subject matter in writing
• ability to reflect on organisations, their operation and role in society

Teaching methods

Teaching and learning activities in the form of lectures, dialogue, discussion, problem solving, independent work, group work, company visits and/or guest lectures.

Compulsory learning activities

2 work requirements, of which at least 1 is group-based, must be approved before the exam can be taken.

Assessment

Written school exam, 4 hours. The exam is held on a digital exam system.

The time and place for the exam will be announced on Studentweb.

Grade scale A-F, where F corresponds to fail.
