PL471 Cultural Heritage Management
Course description for academic year 2023/2024
Contents and structure
The course combines knowledge of cultural heritage, with practical tasks and exercises linked to cultural heritage management. We go through cultural heritage connected to different cultural groups, different historical eras and different geographical contexts. Furthermore, we learn about the historical development of the cultural landscape and of buildings in Norway. Underlying this, we also gain insight into historical features and important actors in Norwegian cultural heritage management. Finally, we get examples on how cultural heritage can be used as a resource for local development and value creation. By taking the students' backgrounds as a starting point, the course seeks to build on existing knowledge, and thereby create engagement.
The practical exercises in the course are vocationally aimed at cultural heritage management, especially on local level. The students will work with assessments, valuations, databases, plans and legislation. The excursions give an insight into the physical environment where cultural heritage plays an important role, and we also practice practical case management.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The student:
- is familiar with the characteristics of different categorizations for archaeological and historical monuments and sites, and can provide examples.
- has basic knowledge about the relationship between identity and cultural heritage management
- is familiar with the main historical trends and important actors in Norwegian cultural heritage management.
- has knowledge about developments in Norwergian building practice, as well as the connection and differences between building practice and architecture.
- has knowledge about how culture influence landscapes, and the historical development of the cultural landscape.
- has knowledge about the connection between spatial planning and cultural heritage management.
- is familiar with methods for discovering, registering and valuation of cultural heritage
- has knowledge about how cultural heritage may be an asset for local development, and important tensions that may appear.
Skills
The student is able to:
- use databases to find information about registered archaeological and historical monuments and sites.
- give advice on basic cultural heritage management in relation to municipal planning.
- use guidelines for valuation of archaeological and historical monuments and sites.
- perform basic cultural heritage management, by use of the Cultural Heritage act and cultural heritage management plans.
General competence
The student:
- has experience in writing and processing an academic essay.
- has training in searching for and applying relevant literature in academic writing.
- can read and provide constructive feedback to student peers.
- has training in oral presentation of course relevant subjects.

2 submissions of drafts for exam project
Read and give feedback to the exam project drafts of 1-2 groups
Oral presentation of exam project in groups
Assessment
Written exam project in groups (40 %)
Individual oral exam (60 %)
Grading: A-F, where F is not passed. Both partial exams must be passed to pass the course.
