Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

In this module, students will explore nursing subject areas, problems and questions, and clarify them through the use of theory, research and experience-based knowledge. The purpose is to form a basis for knowledge and understanding of nursing as subject, profession and science.

This module requires systematic academic work, where the aims are to highlight new knowledge, and contribute to improved quality and innovation in nursing. After submission of the thesis students are expected to continue communicating their work. The presentation may be a poster presentation or an oral presentation of approximately10 minutes. The presentation of the bachelor's thesis will be held at the Health and Social Sciences - EXPO at HVL at each campus.  

The thesis can take the following forms:

1. Literature study of a specific issue

2. An essay based on experience based knowledge, which is discussed with reference to relevant subject knowledge and research.  

3. Empirical thesis based on participation in an ongoing research or development project

Students can write a thesis individually or in pairs.

Students must follow HVL’s Bachelor thesis guidelines.

Knowledge:

The student...

  • Has comprehensive knowledge of the core values, theories and concepts of nursing as subject and profession
  • Is familiar with scientific theory, research methods and research ethics
  • has knowledge of how to keep their subject knowledge up to date

 

Skills:

The student...

  • can apply professional knowledge of health, illness and society
  • can master systematic literature searches, and to use and critically evaluate search results and other academic literature
  • can use professional knowledge and relevant results from research while discussing theoretical and practical issues, and make choices in line with knowledge based practice
  • can reflect on and handle professional, ethical and legal issues
  • can reflect on current practice and methods, and discuss implementation of new perspectives and innovation
  • is able to find, assess and refer to academic texts

 

General competence:

The student...

  • can plan and complete a project.
  • can plan, complete and disseminate a systematic academic work
  • can present and communicate key subjects such as theories, problems and solutions,
  • is able to share opinions and experiences with other professionals, and thereby contribute to the development of best practice

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be approved before students can sit the final examination:

1: Tutored project seminar related to the project plan with peer feedback

2: Project plan, up to 1500 words

3: Two personal supervisions or supervisions in pairs

Approved compulsory activities are valid for four semesters. Regarding absence from compulsory learning activities the same rules are applied as regarding absence from practical training, cf. Regulations relating to Programmes of Study and Examination at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

Bachelor of nursing thesis.

Written assignment, individually or in pairs

Grading

Graded from A to F, where A to E are passed and F is a failed.

If not passed bachelor thesis, revised and improved version of the BA thesis may be submitted for evaluation. Students are entitled to tutoring.
