ØMO111 Research Methods in the Social Sciences

Course description for academic year 2023/2024

Contents and structure

The course is about basic social science research methods in the fields of economics and business administration. The aim is to provide students with knowledge and skills that make them able to conduct basic social science studies and write an empirically grounded bachelor thesis, or write an assignment surrounding Internship. The students should also be able to critically evaluate their sources and reflect upon their own practice.

The teaching is a combination of ordinary lectures and group based teaching where central themes and concepts are explained, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In addition there are seminars, group work under supervision and practical training in quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. The subject will assist in the preparation of the bachelor thesis, the main project and Internship.

Learning Outcome

By completion of the subject the student will have:

Knowledge

  • Be able to account for important concepts and ways of thinking in the social sciences
  • Be able to conduct simple social science studies

Skills

  • Be able to account for the process going from problem formulation to analysis
  • Be able to apply theory to motivate qualitative and quantitative analyses in social science
  • Be able to construct interview guides / surveys
  • Be able to conduct analyses of qualitative and quantitative data material

General skills

  • Be able to read and understand social scientific work
  • Be able to critically approach source material and reflect on own practice
  • Be able to work in groups with the aim of completing own research

Recommended previous knowledge

Knowledge of basic mathematics and statistics

Lectures, seminars, supervision

Compulsory learning activities

1 group based mandatory assignment. Mandatory work needs to be approved before the exam.

Upon approval the assignment is valid in the exam semester and 3 subsequent semesters

Assessment

Written school exam, 4 hours. Digital exam.

Time and place for the exam will be announced in Studentweb
