BAMM1002 Maritime Economy and Logistics

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Part 1 of the course focuses on the financial side of the maritime industry with a combination of historical and geographical approach, and on general ship market theory with a focus on key drivers within the maritime market. The course also presents theory about the industry's clusters and the competition for the best location between countries.

Part 2 of the course is an introduction to basic logistics where the fundamental theories from logistics science are studied.

- International competitiveness and the maritime clusters

- Global maritime economy including macro and micro economics

- Basic maritime logistics and distribution chains

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student has

- broad knowledge of historical development and competitiveness within the various maritime segments

- insight into how the maritime global economy works, and within micro and macro economics

- knowledge of basic maritime logistics theory

- insight into the development of maritime distribution chains

Skills

The student can

- read and interpret annual accounts

- apply basic business economics words and expressions

- understand the various forms of financing used in maritime projects, and can calculate the profitability of various investments

- analyze how the maritime economy works in a global perspective

- explain basic principles in maritime logistics

- explain the layout and functions of the maritime distribution chains and factors of influence

- provide qualified explanations of trends and cycles in the various shipping markets

General competence

The student can

- plan and carry out tasks that deal with issues in the maritime industry, as well as reflect and present the economic impact of the maritime economy nationally and internationally

- acquire up-to-date knowledge in maritime economics and logistics and is able to communicate this

Recommended previous knowledge

The course is part of a transition arrangement from a 2-year maritime technical vocational school to a bachelor's degree.

Portfolio with 3 elements. All 3 elements must be passed to pass the course, and all 3 elements are weighted equally.
