BAMM3001 Organisation and Management

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The course content is based on current organizational and management psychology theory, adapted to BAMM students. The course content is divided into three main sections:

1. The organization

Small section with basic organizational theory, followed by special characteristics of the maritime industry in general and the vessel as a unit in particular.

  • Organizational culture
  • Organizational development, organizational learning and restructuring

2. The employee: the human in the organisation

General human and group-based assumptions and limitations in a maritime setting.

  • Team and group psychology
  • Diversity and cultural understanding
  • Working environment, job well-being and safety climate
  • Operational psychology

3. Management

Main part of the course. The starting point is taken in various management theories and perspectives. Focus on what it means to be a leader in a maritime setting. Leadership and management development are in focus. We make it possible for students to work on developing an understanding of their own leadership role and acquire knowledge about crisis management and security management.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

  • has broad knowledge of central theories and relevant work and organizational psychology topics related to different levels in a maritime organization (organization, management, team and employee)
  • knows relevant recent research in the subject area
  • has in-depth knowledge of leadership roles, crisis management and security management

Skills

The student

  • can use relevant theory about management and organization to understand own organization
  • can reflect on (own) leadership role
  • knows relevant motivational, organizational and management tools well enough to apply them in practice

General competence

The student

  • has insight into subjects and professional ethical issues related to organization and management
  • has the ability to see own leadership role in a larger organizational perspective
  • can exchange views and experiences with others within the subject area, and contribute to the development of good practice

None

Recommended previous knowledge

The course is part of a transition arrangement from a 2-year maritime technical vocational school to a bachelor's degree.
