ELE501 Advanced Control Systems Engineering

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The course covers first basic modeling, analysis, and control of Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) systems. Further, more advanced topics from Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems based on state-space modeling and discrete systems are addressed. The students will acquire a basic understanding of more advanced principles and techniques within modeling, simulation, design and analysis of more advanced control systems within a broad technological area. Thematic approach and connection to nowadays actual topics as Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) is also addressed. The course will provide a thorough knowledge and understanding to work with actual issues within classical and modern automated industrial systems, and introduction to topics concerning measurement, communication and control of process variables through increasingly more actual CPS.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • The student has knowledge of the mathematical description of continuous and discrete processes based on classical monovariabel modeling, together with more advanced multivariable modeling in state-space. Analysis and design of multivariable continuous and discrete control systems through actual methods such as controller and observer design, diagonalization/decoupling, optimal control and model predictive control (MPC).

Skills

  • The student can apply principles of design, control, stability analysis and optimization, and can perform qualitative evaluations of modern control systems.
  • The student can participate in research and development activities,

Competence

  • The student can communicate information related to control systems engineering, stability issues and solutions in physics and classical control theory.
  • The student can contribute to the technological development in society.
