Contents and structure

The courses in English in Teacher Education aim to develop your academic, didactic and practical competence within the areas of language, literature and culture.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student

• has knowledge of the curriculum, national tests and teaching aids for the subject English
• is familiar with literature and other forms of cultural expression that can be used to 25 teach children and young people

Skills

The student

• is capable of using midway and final assessment to guide pupils in English tuition capable of obtaining and facilitating information on social issues and cultural topics for use in teaching
• is capable of planning and leading varied and differentiated learning activities, including digital activities, which promote in-depth learning and development of the basic skills
• is capable of discussing, orally and in writing, a range of fiction and non-fiction
• is capable of obtaining and facilitating information on social issues and cultural topics for use in teaching
• can analyse literature, as well as select and facilitate work with English language literature and other cultural expressions for children and young people

General competence

The student

• is is capable of disseminating relevant subject matter and communicating in English in a manner adapted for pupils in years 5-10
• is capable of reflecting on his/her own learning and teaching practice in light of fundamental ethical values and the school’s responsibility for the personal growth of children and young people
• is capable of working independently and together with others on facilitating pupils’ learning and development
• is capable of maintaining and developing his/her own linguistic and didactic competence

Teaching methods

Teaching will primarily consist of lectures, seminars, group-work and discussion. The course requires systematic work with exercises and active participation in class. The learning platform Canvas will be used to relay information and provide feedback on student work.

The course includes a trip to the Norwegian Study Center in York. The trip is offered as part of the teaching in this subject, but is not compulsory. An alternative plan will therefore be offered for those who choose not to go. Travel expenses, accommodation and course fees are paid by the individual student. Practice is an integral part of the study.

Compulsory learning activities

• Two individual assignments which are subject to approval by the lecturer.
• Students are required to attend 70% of the classes. Those with more than 30% absence will not be approved for the exam, regardless of the reason for the absence.

Assessment

Written exam, 6 hours.

Graded on a scale from A - F, where F is failed.
