Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
The course aims to provide a deeper understanding of drama pedagogy and further develop a basic foundation for drama teaching and pedagogical research.
The course is divided into two parts:
- Through practical demonstrations, theoretical lessons, and self-study, students explore key developments in drama pedagogy. Both Norwegian and international expertise in theory and practice are covered.
- Introduction to the methodology "From Text to Theater": how to create preparatory workshops and, if applicable, follow-up work for theater performances.

Knowledge
The student
- has in-depth knowledge of key concepts, trends, and developments within drama pedagogy, both internationally and nationally.
- possesses in-depth knowledge of historical and general trends in drama pedagogy, both internationally and nationally.
- has in-depth knowledge of the role of drama pedagogy in teaching, education, art, culture, and society.
- has in-depth knowledge of exploring, discussing, and problematizing philosophical and arts didactic traditions in the field.
Skills
The student
- can apply drama pedagogical methods in various societal areas.
- can critically and constructively reflect on the theory and practice of the field.
- can use drama as a research method.
General Competence
The student
- can plan, conduct, and analyze drama teaching in various societal arenas based on subject theory.
- can account for the expressive forms and arts didactic methods of the field in different societal areas/arenas.
- can assess and use various drama pedagogical working methods in their practical work.

Teaching methods
The teaching is conducted through workshops, lectures, and seminars. The study requires active participation in classes, independent literature studies, and students contributing with their own workshop and seminar presentations. It is expected that students form study groups.
Compulsory learning activities
The following mandatory learning activities must be approved by the course instructor to be eligible for the exam:
- Requirement for active participation in 80 percent of the classes.
- Mandatory Learning Activity 1 in pairs: Develop, implement, and analyze a drama sequence for a specific target group. Students are to develop and carry out the introductory phase (approx. 1 hour) of a process drama for an imaginary target group. The sequence should be conducted either with the target group or with other students in the master's program.
- Mandatory Learning Activity 2 in groups: Develop, implement, and analyze a workshop in "From Text to Theater" for a specific target group. Students are to develop and carry out the introductory phase (approx. 1 hour). The workshop should be conducted either with the target group or with other students in the master's program.
If a mandatory learning activity is assessed as not approved, written feedback will be provided. Students who do not receive approval for one or more learning activities are offered the opportunity to correct errors and deficiencies (once) or to complete an alternative learning activity provided by the course instructor. The date for a new attempt must be within the current semester and within specified deadlines, but no later than three weeks before the exam period begins.
Detailed guidelines will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Assessment
Home exam, 5 days.
The student is required to analyze a practical work in relation to the subject theory, with an extent of approximately 4000 words. Teachers do not provide guidance in connection with the completion of the home exam.
Grading scale: A-F, where F corresponds to fail.
