NABP3004 Vessel management - Cargo Handling

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Course content: Concepts and techniques for loading and discharging of ships. Stability, trim, and heeling. Cargo handling. Relevant international rules and regulations.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student

  • has wide knowledge of central problems, processes, tools, and methods within loading technique, stability, trim, list/heeling, and handling of various types of cargo.
  • has knowledge of research and development within the discipline of loading technique.
  • has knowledge of loading, transport, and discharging of dry and liquid cargoes in bulk, general cargo/Unitized cargo, dangerous cargoes, polluting cargoes, and grain loading, and has the ability to update him-/herself within this discipline.
  • is familiar with the discipline's history, traditions, and distinctive nature. The Candidate understand the importance and significance of the discipline.

Skills:

The student

  • is able to apply professional knowledge on theoretical and practical issues and perform comprehensive calculations within the subjects which are taught in the course
  • is familiar with research and development work in the field
  • has broad knowledge of cargo handling, including loading and discharging, of the various types of cargo which are taught during the course.
  • has insight into the importance and historical development of the field

General competence:

The student

  • The student shall acquire the theoretical competence within loading operations as a responsible officer on operational and management level according to the STCW Convention, including 2010 Manila Amendments, table A-II/1 and A-II/2.
  • The student is able to plan and carry out various tasks and projects within the discipline, either alone or as a part of a group, in accordance with requirements and principles.
  • The student is able to convey central problems and solutions both in writing and orally, and is able to participate in developing good practice.

Teaching methods

Lectures, case work, self studies, simulator exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

Two of three compulsory tests must be approved.

Assessment

Written exam, 5 hours.
