Contents and structure

The module is not offered in the academic year 2024/2025.

The course is an optional part of the Ph.D.-programme Studies of Bildung and Pedagogical Practices. In the course, educational practices are explored and developed in the span between aesthetics and pedagogy. Interdisciplinary as well as subject specific matters are concretized.

Throughout the course, the students will develop critical and independent perspectives in arts-educational and practice-based research. The course includes research forms that cover creative and explorative work aiming for changing educational practices. The common context for such work is educational practices that will meet future needs, such as digital, creative, critical, and collaborative competence as well as agency to handle the unknown.

The course highlights relevant methodological questions such as

• different forms of research in arts education
• different forms of action research
• critical pedagogy
• scenario thinking and utopian thinking
• aesthetic theory and creativity theory

• has insight into arts-educational and practice-based methodology
• is in the front of the knowledge about subject specific Bildung practices
• understands the methodological possibilities as well as structural frames for arts-educational and practice-based research in educational contexts

• can verbalize experiences and reflections connected to arts-educational and practice-based research
• can explore and challenge educational practices and their potential for Bildung
• can problematize and discuss relevant Bildung theories, positions, and perspectives on a high disciplinary level

The student

• can identify relevant aesthetical dilemmas connected to arts-educational and practice-based research, and perform research with disciplinary integrity
• can present arts-educational and practice-based research through well recognized national and international channels
• can challenge established Bildung discourses through arts-educational and practice-led perspectives

Teaching methods

The teaching in the course takes place as an intensive course for two weeks. Organised teaching is given through lectures, seminar, mentoring and workshops.

The students are expected to participate actively in the teaching activities.

Compulsory learning activities

• The student shall present their own arts-educational or practice-based research project orally for the rest of the group. The presentation can be a combination artistic/practical and verbal performance.
• The student shall also give feedback on one of the other course member’s presentations.

The compulsory learning activity must be completed according to a certain deadline and be approved before the student can take the exam.

Assessment

The student shall write a critical reflection as an essay or an article on approximately 10 pages, connected to the oral performance.

Grading scale: pass/fail.

The exam will be assessed based on the learning outcome formulations for the course.

If the student fails, it is possible to resubmit an improved version of the text the next academic year. This can only be done once. If the student fail again, a new text must be submitted.
