Contents and structure

Events and the MICEE-segment are an important part of the tourism industry and knowledge about planning and managing various types of events are useful. Being able to utilize local resources in product development at the destination and offer something unique is an important competitive advantage in today's market.

This subject is practically oriented and provides knowledge about the various types of events that are often referred to in the tourism industry, such as meetings, courses, conferences, congresses, incentive trips, exhibitions and fairs, and events in general.

By taking part in the development and planning of an event, the candidate will learn the practical implementations of an event.

Central themes in the subject are:

- Basic understanding of courses, conferences, congresses, incentive trips, exhibitions and fairs, and events

- Characteristics of various events

- Trends in the market

- Organization and management

- Theme, experiential value, and concept

- Volunteers and management of volunteers

Learning Outcome

After completing the course, it is expected that the candidate has the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge:

On completion of the course, the candidate has knowledge of concepts and theories related to:

- have knowledge of the term MICEE (meetings, incentives, conferences, events, exhibitions) and define the content of meetings, congresses and conferences, events, exhibitions/fairs, and incentive trips

- have knowledge of the market for MICEE in both a global and national perspective

- have knowledge of meetings and events, i.e., history, traditions and the industry’s place in society

- have knowledge on how to plan and develop events

Skills:

On completion of the course, the candidate can apply different professional perspectives and theoretical approaches to:

- plan and develop an event from start to completion

General competence:

Upon completion of the course, the candidate can:

- find, use and refer to relevant information and literature about events and present this in such a way that it solves a problem

- learn the context between sustainable tourism and events

- reflect on the role of event from a destination perspective

- reflect on the role of events from a business perspective

Recommended previous knowledge

RE6-1000 Introduction to Tourism

Teaching methods

Lectures, group assignments and practical work planning a seminar at campus etc.

Compulsory learning activities

Up to three mandatory assignments.

One of the assigments is to plan and carry out an event at campus with up to 20-30 hours practical work per student.

Assessment

Written home exam in groups (2-4 per group), three days, 100%.

Grade: A-F.
