SIK202 Fire and Combustion
Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
Fire and combustion is a two parts subject composed by fire laboratory and combustion theory. The main goal of this subject is to provide the foundations of combustion science, introducing the main the main concepts and principles of combustion, as well as possible technological applications.
With the combination of theory and laboratory practices, the students will learn the basic theory that characterises any combustion process at the same time that they experiment with the behaviour of flames, getting both competences while they can link what they read in the books with what they can find in the real world.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
The student
- Can discuss the global utilization of fuels.
- Can analyse and use chemical reactions in connection with a fire related to energy production, flame temperature and combustion products.
- Can explain the kinetics involved in the combustion process.
- Can apply the theory of heat transfer during the combustion process.
- Has knowledge of premixed flames and can calculate their behaviour.
- Can explain the emissions generated during a combustion process.
- Can analyse and explain how combustion engines work.
Skills
The student can
- Calculate heat transfer through structures and between solids.
- Determine the kinetics of a combustion process, calculating parameters as the sufficient oxygen for combustion and the gases emitted during the process.
- Develop experimental works related with the theoretical knowledge that they have learn in the previous lectures.
General qualification:
The student
- Can present the specialized knowledge, laboratory and measuring reports.
- Can use computer tools to perform calculations and present the results.
- Can reflect over his work in a team and schedule tasks.
- Can identify solutions in his field and contribute to discussion related to impact and significance of the solution.

Teaching methods
Lectures and lab sessions
Compulsory learning activities
Compulsory attendance to at least 80% of the lab sessions.
Assessment
Part 1: Portfolio, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.
Part 2: Written exam, 3 hours, accounts for 50 % of the final grade.
Grade: A - E / passed; F / failed.
Both parts must be passed.

Exam: Simple calculator: The allowed calculator is Casio fx-82 (all varieties: ES, ES Plus, EX, Solar etc.)
Portfolio: All support material is permitted
