ØAA114 Human Resource Management

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The course is anchored in and designed to support the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Decent Work. The course is based on a combination of theory and practical examples from working life and provides training in the application of theory on practical issues.

HRM is a core subject in modern organizational education. The course provides an introduction to how organizations can utilize the abilities, knowledge, personal characteristics and skills of their employees based on a responsible management of human resources throughout the employment relationship from recruitment to exit. How one can facilitate learning, competence development, motivation, good working conditions and job satisfaction is emphasised. The course provides basic knowledge on the responsibilities, role and tasks of the HRM function in the management and leadership of organizations, as well as knowledge on relevant methods, means and tools.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge about:

  • central HRM processes throughout the employment relationship from recruitment to exit
  • the significance of strategic anchoring of HRM
  • the responsibilities, role and tasks of the HRM function, including relevant methods, means and tools
  • the Norwegian working life model, rules and regulations of working life and the significance of internationalization for HRM
  • sustainable management of the human resources of an organization

Skills

The candidate can

  • analyse, plan, implement and evaluate central HRM processes and measures in organizations, such as recruitment, improvement of the working environment, competence development and ending the working relationship
  • reflect critically on different HRM practices in organizations

General competence

The candidate has competence to

  • display central academic knowledge in the field of HRM both orally and in writing
  • apply his/her knowledge to give constructive feed-back to others in the professional area of HRM
  • contribute to strengthen the change competence of organizations in the field of HRM

Recommended previous knowledge

BØA112 Organisasjon og ledelse, or equivalent courses.

Teaching methods

The course is organized as a variation between lectures, discussion and group assignments.

Compulsory learning activities

1 group based learning acitivty in the form of oral presentation and peer-review must be approved before the exam can be taken.

Assessment

Group based semester assignment with group based adjusting oral exam for about 30 minutes.

The final grade is based on the grade on the semester assignment that can be adjusted up or down by maximum one grade after the oral exam.

The final grade after the adjusting oral exam can be set individually for the different group members based on their performance on the oral exam.

Grading scale is A-F, where F is fail.

Examination support material

Semester assignment: All are allowed

Adjusted oral examination: Prepared presentation can be used.
