MAS207 Finite Element Method

Course description for academic year 2025/2026

Contents and structure

The finite element method (FEM) is a numerical method with a central position in strength and deformation calculations in structures. The method is also used to calculate flow, heat conduction, and other types of engineering problems.

Students will be able to make a simulation model and perform strength calculations with Creo Simulate, and Ansys.

Contents

The bearing forces, point load, evenly distributed loads, trusses, moment of inertia, stress types, safety factor, combined load effect, and optimization will be covered.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course MAS207-Element Method (FEM), the student has the following qualifications:

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge of methods for building simulation models.
  • Have knowledge of how customer requirements, production requirements, and design requirements affect the structure of the models.
  • Know optimized and thereby environmentally friendly manufacturing methods and link these to the 3D modeling process.

Skills

  • Modeling with solid elements
  • Modeling with shell elements
  • Modeling with beam elements
  • Generate networks of nodes and elements
  • Deformation analysis
  • defining of boundary conditions and externally applied forces
  • Calculation of local stresses and deformations.

Prerequisites

  • 3D-Modeling
  • Engineering’s Mechanics, Statics

Entry requirements

Approved compulsory work in MAS142 Statics and Solid Mechanics

Teaching methods

Lecture, Exercise, project

Compulsory learning activities

  • 4 out of 5 individual assignments must be approved, before the project assignment is distributed.
  • Project Assignment approved. The project assignment will be distributed during the last 3 weeks of the semester and must be submitted individually.

Approved compulsory submissions are valid for four semesters.

Assessment

Oral Examination, up to 30 minutes.

Grade scale: A - E / F, where F does not correspond to pass

Examination support material

Software used for teaching includes applications such as Ansys Workbench and Creo Parametric.
