NABP1003 Academic formation and skills - Seamanship
Course description for academic year 2025/2026
Contents and structure
"Danning og akademisk håndverk - sjømannskap". Direct translation of the Norwegian title is not possible as the English language has no equivalent to "Danning". In very general terms it stands for those qualities that a human must possess to be considered a decent and civilized member of society. Hence, the chosen English title is: Decency and academic craftmanship - seamanship.
The course aims to develop students’ knowledge of various professions, their understanding of their own field of study, and their ability to reflect on knowledge and ethics. This is viewed in the context of sustainable development to promote perspectives and theories that enhance understanding of contemporary globalization and provide a foundation for addressing complex and unforeseen challenges. The course encourages students to be active and curious, take responsibility for their own learning, and develop innovative abilities.
Decency ("danning") concerns the relationship between the individual and the community. To be an integrated and valued member of the community, the individual must behave in a way that contributes to a good life for both others and themselves. "Danning" (decency) is the umbrella term for the knowledge and skills individuals need to be valued members of the community. "Danning" enhances individuals’ ability to tackle future challenges and is thus an important prerequisite for the continued existence of civilized, sustainable, and free societies.
"Danning" and education mutually reinforce each other. Education is about acquiring knowledge, skills, and abilities, while "danning" is about knowing how to apply that knowledge for the common good in a rapidly changing world.
The writing process is central to academic education, and academic craftsmanship in this course is linked to writing academic texts.
The course takes place during the first semester of the program and is worth 10 credits. It consists of a common part worth 5 credits and a discipline-specific part worth 5 credits. The common and discipline-specific parts form an integrated unit in the teaching.
The content of the course includes ethics, theory of science, scientific methods, sustainability, academic writing, information literacy, source usage, communication, collaboration, and professional knowledge.
