Contents and structure

Events and the MICEE-segment are an important part of the tourism industry and knowledge about planning and managing various types of events are useful. Being able to utilize local resources in product development at the destination and offer something unique is an important competitive advantage in today's market.

This subject is practically oriented and provides knowledge about the various types of events that are often referred to in the tourism industry, such as meetings, courses, conferences, congresses, incentive trips, exhibitions and fairs, and events in general.

By taking part in the development and planning of an event, the candidate will learn the practical implementations of an event.

Central themes in the subject are:

- Basic understanding of courses, conferences, congresses, incentive trips, exhibitions and fairs, and events

- Characteristics of various events

- Trends in the market

- Organization and management

- Theme, experiential value, and concept

- Volunteers and management of volunteers

- Sponsors

- Marketing, PR and media

- Ownership and management

- Economy

- Extended effects of events

- Events in strategic destination development

- Evaluation

Learning Outcome

After completing the course, the student must have the following total learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, the candidate has knowledge of concepts and theories related to:

- Understading of MICEE in a Norwegian and international perspective. The students must be able to define the content in the categories meeting, congress and conference, event, exhibition/fairs and incentive trips and also have an understanding what characterizes these

- have knowledge of sustainable, holistic event development

- have knowledge of meetings and events, their history, traditions, character and place in society

- have knowledge of how one plans and develops events with a focus on sustainability, innovation and the use of new and relevant technology

Skills

On completion of the course, the candidate can use different academic perspectives and theoretical approaches to:

- plan and develop an event from idea to evaluation

General competence

Upon completion of the course, the candidate can:

- find, use and refer to relevant information and specialist material about events and present it in such a way that it solves a problem

- learn the connection between sustainable tourism and events

- reflect on the role of events in a destination perspective

- reflect on the role of events in a business perspective

Recommended previous knowledge

RE6-1000 Introduction to Tourism

Teaching methods

Lectures, group assignments, workshop and practical work planning a seminar at campus etc.

Compulsory learning activities

Up to two mandatory assignments.

One of the assigments is to plan and carry out an event at campus with up to 20-30 hours practical work per student.

Assessment

Written home exam in groups (2-4 per group), two days, 100%.

Grades between A and F will be given, where F corresponds to fail.
