BAMM4000 Bachelor project

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The bachelor thesis will address problems related to the maritime area. The assignment must primarily be linked to practical issues or challenges in shipping companies, maritime companies, maritime public agencies or existing R&D work at the institution.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

The student

  • Has knowledge that contributes to the students being able to methodically investigate a specific academic problem.
  • Has broad knowledge of key topics, theories and issues related to the bachelor thesis.
  • Has broad knowledge of processes, tools and methods associated with the bachelor thesis.
  • Knows research and development work within the chosen topic.

Skills:

The student

  • Can further develop and apply the knowledge they have acquired in the form of a practical problem, or challenges in shipping companies, maritime companies and / or maritime public agencies and existing R&D work.
  • Can exercise a critical understanding of knowledge in the maritime disciplines.
  • Can update already acquired knowledge and obtain relevant research and development work.
  • Can put the theories into a larger context.
  • Masters relevant tools, techniques and forms of expression.
  • Can find, evaluate and refer to information and present this in order to illuminate a problem.
  • Can work with others at the same level on a common goal.
  • Is able to solve challenges related to project work in groups in collaboration with group members.
  • Can reflect on own professional practice and adjust this under supervision.

General competence:

The student

  • Has developed insight into relevant issues within the maritime area.
  • Can plan and carry out similar projects, both alone and with others.
  • Can communicate the thesis' problems, theories and results both in writing and orally.
  • Is aware of ethical guidelines and challenges associated with work on similar projects.
  • Has experience of working in groups towards a common goal.

Entry requirements

At least 60 credits on college level within the study program are required in order to register for the bachelor's thesis.

The course BAMM2001 Research Method and Academic Writing must be passed no later than the registration deadline for the semester in which the bachelor's thesis is to be submitted.

Recommended previous knowledge

None.

Teaching methods

As a general rule, the students must solve the task in groups of 2-3 people. Students will receive supervision. Before starting the work, the supervisor/course coordinator must approve the problem formulation.

Compulsory learning activities

A research proposal with description of theme, progress plan and preliminary problem must be approved by the supervisor within a specified deadline.

Assessment

The assessment is based on the submitted bachelor thesis. Grades A-F.
