BIDR204 Physiology and training science

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

The subject covers human physiology, physiological changes as a result of exercise, and performance-determining factors. The students will also learn to plan training and conduct relevant tests to assess physical capacity.

Learning Outcome

Upon completing the course, the student will have achieved the following overall learning outcomes:

Knowledge
The student

  • has a broad knowledge of physiology with a focus on organ systems central to exercise and performance
  • has a thorough understanding of adaptations to endurance and strength training
  • has a solid understanding of testing physical capacity
  • has comprehensive knowledge of training planning
  • is familiar with how to conduct a research project

Skills
The student

  • can apply research-based knowledge to plan training for various individuals and training goals
  • can conduct relevant tests to measure physical capacity
  • can collect, analyze, interpret, and present quantitative data

General Competence
The student

  • can critically evaluate and discuss various performance-determining factors
  • can utilize research-based knowledge to develop training plans
  • can discuss key issues in research related to strength and endurance training

Entry requirements

Teaching methods

The teaching and learning methods in this course are largely based on lectures, group work, and individual work. The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions with a focus on student-active learning methods.

Compulsory learning activities

The following mandatory learning activities must be approved for the student to be eligible to take the exam:

  • Mandatory attendance and active participation in practical sessions
  • A written assignment related to testing, where the student collects, analyzes, interprets, and presents test data

These learning activities are linked to the skills learning outcomes, where the student is expected to apply academic knowledge to plan training for various individuals and training goals, conduct relevant tests for physical capacity, and collect, analyze, interpret, and present test data.

Assessment

Individual written school exam, 6 hours.
Grading scale A-F, where F corresponds to a fail.
