ELE204 Control Systems Engineering 1
Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
The course covers basic principles of modeling, simulation, analysis and design of classical Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) control systems by using PID and ‘lag-lead’ controller for the most encountered industrial applications.
The course addresses themes in electro technology, mechanics, fluid mechanics, and electromagnetism from classical physics together with calculus, linear systems and stability from mathematics so that to form a scientific foundation for working with automatic systems in technological courses.
The course includes teaching sessions, problem solving seminars, and practical laboratory exercises.
PC together with technical based and simulation software like Matlab for both control, processing, storing and presentation of data, are important tools in the course.
Control Systems Engineering 1 provides an introduction in the following concepts and themes:
- Dynamical modeling of physical SISO basic systems like electrical, mechanical and electromechanical, from physical principles.
- Mathematical modeling of Linear-Time-Invariant (LTI) systems through differential equations, step response and linearization.
- Reduction of more complex systems by using block diagrams or signal-flow graphs.
- Frequency analysis by using Bode diagram.
- Stability analysis.
- Steady-state error.
Lag-Lead- and PID-controller design.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
At the end of the course the student has knowledge
- of the mathematical description, analysis and design of dynamic processes and systems.
- of the application of sensors, actuators and measurement systems to implement negative feedback systems and stability analysis.
- of how requirements such as transient response and steady-state error can be used to design control systems by using a controller.
Skills
At the end of the course, the student can
- apply physical principles of mechanics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics in analysis of dynamical systems.
- master basic control theory and the use of relevant instruments in experimental work so that to tune controller parameters as required by system specifications.
- work in a structured and targeted manner both alone and within team environment.
Competence
- The student can communicate basic information related to theories, issues and solutions in physics and classical control theory (applied to SISO feedback systems).
- The student understands the role of the engineer within the technological development in society.
