EVN1018 Introduction to physical health risks in the maritime industry
Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
The maritime legislation must ensure a fully responsible working environment and safe working conditions. The crew must therefore have knowledge of laws and regulations related to the working environment and basic theoretical understanding and competence about physical and ergonomic exposures in everyday work. This means that they must be able to map sources of danger, carry out risk analysis and implement measures.
Main topics that are reviewed during the course:
- noise and vibration
- energy related to falls and work equipment (machines and tools)
- manual work which focus on heavy and monotonous work and unfavorable working positions (ergonomics)
Forskrift om arbeidsmiljø, sikkerhet og helse for de som har sitt arbeid om bord på skip form the basis of the course. The course is also linked to the Skipssikkerhetsloven and Forskrift om sikkerhetsstyringssystem for norske skip og flyttbare innretninger.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
- The student is familiar with the consequences for the employee's health if he is exposed to adverse physical exposures and ergonomic loads
- The student has knowledge of health promotion work that prevents injuries and accidents so that health and safety are safeguarded
- The student has knowledge of laws and regulations that apply to physical sources of danger
Skills
- The student can map sources of danger that occur in everyday work, carry out simple risk analysis and work systematically with physical and ergonomic safety
- The student can assess whether physical exposures and ergonomic loads are managed in a responsible manner and whether they are in accordance with the requirements of the legislation
General competence
- The student has insight into relevant academic and professional ethical issues
- The student can communicate important academic subject matters such as theories, problems and solutions
- The student can exchange opinions with professionals and participate in professional discussions and through this contribute to the development of good work environment
