FØS8303 Modeling and analysis using Excel

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Excel is a software most used in industry to do analysis and data reporting. However, many people are not familiar with the true capability of excel and what they can do with it.

In this course, we will learn about the more advanced analytical tools in Excel - Power Query, PowerPivot and Power Maps. We will also take a deeper look at the Data tab and see how to use tools such as Pivot tables, Scenario Manager, What - If analysis and other tools.

Employees who know how to these tools will be able to utilize the full power of Excel and be able to perform complex analysis on large data sets easily, and present it in an appropriate way.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • Understands how to get data from various sources into Excel
  • Knows how to use Power Query to investigate data
  • Knows how to use Power Pivot to link multiple data together and analyze
  • Knows how to use DAX to perform calculations within pivot tables and Power Pivot
  • Knows how to visualize data using charts and Power Charts
  • Knows how to use tools such as Scenario manager, What - if analysis and Solver
  • Knows how to present data using Power Maps

General competence

The student can:

  • Think and plan data gathering and analysis in Excel
  • Understands how to use Excel tools for handing large data sets
  • Perform calculations and analysis using large data sets

Recommended previous knowledge

A good understanding of Excel is an advantage

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work for practical exercises.

Compulsory learning activities

No compulsory learning activity, however students will be encouraged to do the different practice data sets and group works.

Assessment

Written individual or group assignment with up to three participants in each group. The assignment can be written either in English or Norwegian.
