MAS305 CFD for Engineers
Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
The course introduces the use of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software for calculating selected topics in engineering. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary practical basics and knowledge of possibilities and limitations related to numerical fluid calculations. They will also learn to perform relevant simulations.
- Introduction to CFD using examples related to the student’s study programme
- Repetition of basic fluid dynamics
- Numerical calculation methods and theory - possibilities and limitations of using different CFD software and numerical methods
- Introduction to CFD software
- Introduction to mesh generation
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the course, the student must have the following qualifications:
Knowledge
- Explain basic concepts in the course
- Know different numerical calculation methods for calculating fluid-structure interactions
- Know the possibilities and limitations associated with the calculation methodology and software used
- Good understanding of when it is appropriate to use CFD software over other general or dedicated software / methods
- Know the balance between time efficiency and accuracy
Skills
- Use software to import / export geometric files between relevant software
- The candidate can decide when a result is satisfactory, even when it is not physically correct with respect to the limitations of the software.
- Run simple simulations in CFD software
General competence
- Reflect on own professional practice, work in groups and write a technical report
Entry requirements
Approved compulsory work in MAS220 Basic Fluid Mechanics, or KJE102 Applied Fluid Mechanics, or equivalent
Approved compulsory work in 3D Modelling and drawing from one of the following courses: ING125/ING126/MAS101/MAS105/MAS207, or equivalent
Teaching methods
Lectures, Exercise, Projects
Students get access to CFD software on their own PC.
Compulsory learning activities
Project-based teaching consisting of the following parts:
- 4 of 5 individual submissions must be approved before given deadlines.
- Detailed guidelines and deadlines are announced at the start of the semester.
Approved compulsory submissions are valid for 4 semesters.
Assessment
Part 1: Individual project assignment (counts 50% of the grade).
Part 2: Oral individual exam (counts 50% of the grade).
Both parts must be passed for the subject to be passed.
Grade scale: A - E / F, where F does not correspond to pass
Marine students have the opportunity to choose between assignments that are performed in either ANSYS or Open FOAM when completing the individual project assignment.

Oral exam: No aids are allowed
