MGUMU301 Music 2, module 1 - Musical encounters in and outside the classroom

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

Music 2 subject 1 is open to exchange students.

This module focuses on practical and performative activity that integrate different parts of the music subject in schools. by working with the core elements in the new curriculum for Norwegian primary and secondary school (Fagfornyelsen 2020), including performing-, creating- and experiencing music, as well as working with cultural understanding.

Cultural and musical community, learning and different kinds of cooperation in formal and informal venues will be central issues in this subject. The students will develop musical and pedagogical judgement and wisdom through their work with singing, playing, and musical leadership, including adaptive teaching, pupil involvement, inclusion and diversity.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

At the end of the module the student has obtained knowledge of:

  • children and youth's musical culture, media and technology, and the relationship between formal and informal learning in music
  • manifold and including communities for musical learning and how this knowledge is applied in school
  • the relationship between music and pupils' emotional and social competences, and between music and early learning in school

Skills

At the end of the module the student can:

  • develop his/her musical and didactical skills through working with singing, playing, musical directing and arranging/composing
  • plan, lead, carry out and assess music teaching programs, and assess the work of individual pupils and groups of pupils
  • discuss the impact of informal musical learning venues on the training of music and dance in school
  • plan, carry out and assess comprehensive music training, and discuss how cooperation with external parts may strengthen musical learning

General competence

At the end of the module the student can:

  • prepare assessment of pupils based on subject knowledge and research knowledge about assessment, and communicate the foundation of the assessment to others

Recommended previous knowledge

30 ects in music or music education

Teaching methods

Lectures, practical work individually, in groups and full class, group work and literature studies. Analogue as well as digital formats.

Observation of, and reflection upon musical practices in and outside of school.

Student-active forms of learning are emphasized, and students' independent work through rehearsal and own efforts are expected.

Compulsory learning activities

  • Attendance in learning activities in teaching, both practical, oral, and written.
  • One practical and one written assignment. One of the assignments will address vocational digital proficiency.

Participation in mandatory learning activities is necessary for the students to prepare and qualify for the exam. The content of the learning activities is based on the learning outcome of the module.

The mandatory learning activities have certain deadlines and must be accepted before the exam. If not accepted, a new accomplishment can be scheduled the same semester. If still not accepted, the learning activity can be accomplished the next time the module runs.
