Course description for academic year 2024/2025
Contents and structure
This course will introduce you to theories, techniques, tools, and methods to work hands on with sustainable destination development and overall tourism planning. Topics like overall tourism planning, knowledge control systems and how to organize and operationalization of economic, physical, environmental, and socio-cultural challenges in tourism development.
Sustainable Destination Development will include an overall sustainable perspective on a destination level and how to develop a plan, the process around it and its stakeholders.
The course will include the following:
- Destination development - methods, analyzes, tools and processes.
- Tourism planning and development (on a global, national, regional and local level)
- Marketing of tourist destinations, both national and internationally.
- Introduction to project management (PLP- method)
- Organizing in destination development
- Sustainable tourism development, i.e., different principles and goals like Innovation Norway’s ten principles and UNs goals of sustainable development.
- Environmental, sociocultural and economic consequences of tourism.

Knowledge
- The student will know how and why one should follow sustainable development practices
- The destination life cycle
- About challenges within sustainable destination development an tourism planning, both at business level and destination level
Skills:
- How to use tools and methods for startup, organizing and operationalization of sustainable destination development projects.
- How to analyze and evaluate tourist destinations.
- How to use methods and tools to implement development measures and business development.
- How to start, develop and work with overall tourism planning in destinations and regions.
General:
- How to start and finish a planning process for a tourist destination.
- How to develop a sustainable tourist destination.

Home exam (7 days), groups of 2-4 students. Counting 100% .
