SYKF200 Nursing within Acute, Chronical and Critical Disease

Contents and structure

This module covers the nursing of acutely, chronically and critically ill patients with medical, surgical and/or mental illnesses. This module forms a theoretical basis for knowledge and understanding of health challenges and courses of treatment, with a special focus on the restorative and rehabilitative functions of nursing.

This module also covers the following topics:

• sociological perspectives of illness, inequality in health and in health services, roles and power
• relevant legislation and public documents
• organisation and management
• risk factors, information security and quality indicators
• interprofessional collaboration
• courses of treatment (patient treatment courses)
• Developmental psychology - the normal development of children and young people and their specific needs
• children and young people in hospital
• relatives - children as relatives
• nursing in brief interactions
• Pre-, peri,- and postoperative nursing

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be approved in order to take the exam:

1: 80% attendance and participation in student-active learning methods (seminars, group work, presentations, simulations), connected to part 1 of the exam, as specified in the timetable.

2: 80% attendance and participation in student-active learning methods (seminars, group work, presentations, simulations) connected to part 2 of the exam, as specified in the timetable

3: One piece of written individual work, up to 1500 words

In the case of absence from compulsory learning activities, the same rules apply as for absence during practical training according to the regulations relating to programmes of study and examinations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

The exam consists of two parts, both of which must be passed for the subject to be considered passed.

Part 1:

Individual oral examination related to medical and surgical topics, 45 minutes (30 minutes questioning, 15 minutes preparation). Weighting 70%

Part 2:

Written school exam related to nursing in mental illness and disorders, duration 3 hours. Weighting 30%

Assessment criteria:

Graded grading scale from A to F, where A to E are passing grades, and F is not passed.

Resitting examinations

In case of failure, the part that was not passed must be retaken.

The resit exam will be conducted in the same manner as the ordinary exam.
