SYKI111 Theoretical Studies in Public Health in a Global Perspective

Course description for academic year 2024/2025

Contents and structure

This module provides broad knowledge, skills and general competence in health-promoting and preventive work from both a national and a global public health perspective. Furthermore, this module will contribute to increased insight into key concepts and topics within global health, internationalization, the UN's sustainability goals and human rights.

Learning Outcome

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

  • will have knowledge of the health-promoting and preventative functions of nursing from a public health perspective

Skills:

The student...

  • will be able to use up-to-date knowledge of the health and welfare system, laws, regulations and guidance documents within public health work in their provision of services

Competence:

The student...

  • will be able to plan and complete a project
  • will be familiar with global health challenges and nursing practices from an international perspective
  • will be able to convey and reflect on professional, ethical and legal issues, and adjust their own practice in the course of their provision of services

Entry requirements

  • Student at a partner institution which Bachelor of Nursing at HVL has an agreement with
  • 60 ECTSs within nursing studies
  • Minimum level B2 in English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR)

Compulsory learning activities

The following coursework must be completed before students can sit the final examination:

1. Participation in study groups, including the presentation of a draft project plan, peer feedback and guidance.

2. An approved project plan.

3. Participate in a lecture on project methodology.

Compulsory learning activities are valid for four semesters. In the case of absence from compulsory learning activities, the same rules apply as for absence during practical training according to the regulations relating to programmes of study and examinations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

Individual Project exam, length 1500 words +/- 10%.The deadline and submission method for this project will be published on Studentweb.

Assessment grading:

Passed/not passed.

New Exam

If the assessment is not passed, it is possible to submit an improved version of the assignment. Students are entitled to new supervision.
