Content and structure

The course provides a broad and basic introduction to different perspectives related to the offshore wind industry. Students are given an introduction to technical, financial and economic, societal, environmental and organisational aspects related to offshore wind (especially floating offshore wind). The course provides an overview of energy, renewable energy and how floating offshore wind farms are built and function. Floating offshore wind is an emerging industry in in Norway within a complex reality characterized by many actors, uncertainty and constant changes. An overview of actors in the value chain and forms of cooperation is a central part of the course, along with uncertainty management, learning and innovation. There will be insight into the activities and roles of various actors, and focus on Haugalandet as a region related to the Utsira-Nord project.

The course is conducted in close collaboration between HVL and actors in the industry with lecturers from both academia and the field of practice. Content overview:

  • History, green transition and sustainability
  • Renewable energy and wind power
  • Wind turbine technology and offshore wind farms
  • Operations related to floating offshore wind
  • Licensing process and the Utsira-Nord project
  • Actors and different roles in the value chain
  • Forms of cooperation and contract structures
  • Regulations, internal control and uncertainty management
  • Learning and innovation
  • Economic, social and environmental sustainability

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

On successful completion of the course, the candidate has broad, general knowledge of the industry and the value chain related to floating offshore wind.

The student:

  • will know relevant concepts in the industry, as well as current theories and issues.
  • has insight into the various links in the supply chain and which actors are involved
  • is familiar with basic concepts in energy production, and has overall insight into which components are included in an offshore wind farm.

Skills:

On successful completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • Explain key elements of uncertainty and explain in a balanced way the advantages and disadvantages of offshore wind in a sustainability perspective.
  • Describe and assess the effects of offshore wind development as a contribution towards a renewable energy mix
  • Describe and evaluate the stakeholder image, the value chain and forms of cooperation
  • Be able to find out about societal benefits, risk elements, economics and conflicts related to offshore wind power

General competence:

The student:

  • Can link the content of the course to development work with offshore wind in their own organization.
  • Can communicate in a critical and knowledge-based manner with stakeholders about projects, technology and challenges related to offshore wind
  • Demonstrates an overall understanding of the value chain of offshore wind development and the life cycle of an offshore wind project

Teaching methods

Four session-based physical gatherings consisting of dialogue-based lectures and work in groups. In addition, self-study and work on individual project.

There is is one compulsory learning activity. This activity will be described in more detail in the teaching plan when the course starts.
