Study plan - English One Year Course, online programme

The study programme aims to provide a broad knowledge of English language, literature and culture from different English-speaking countries. The study programme offers insight into a variety of literary genres as well as other cultural expressions and focuses on relevant historical and societal contexts of production and reception. The study programme further includes courses on English grammar, phonetics, phonology and the history of the English language. The programme aims to train the students' written and oral skills, including academic writing. The programme is fully net based.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful completion of the study, students should have knowledge of

• English-speaking literature and other cultural expressions from around the world, with historical and societal contexts of production and reception
• literary genres and devices, as well as visual and multimodal expressions of meaning
• grammar and phonetics in English
• history of the English language as well as varieties of English

Skills

On successful completion of the study, students should be able to

• analyse literary texts and other cultural expressions employing knowledge about genres, literary devices and other expressions of meaning, as well as placing and discussing historical and societal contexts of production and reception.
• analyse English language use and employ grammatical and phonetic terminology.
• use English orally and in writing according to topic, context and recipient, including in academic texts.

General competence

On successful completion of the study, students should be able to

• communicate orally and written in English according to topic, context and recipient, including in academic texts.
• plan and carry out individual assignments in accordance with academic requirements and principles.

Content

The study programme consists of four courses, each comprising 15 study points (ECTS):

• ENG501: Introduction to English linguistics
• ENG601: Introduction to English-language literature, history and culture
• ENG701: English linguistics 2
• ENG801: English-language literature, history and culture 2

The programme is divided into four blocks of teaching, each course is a block, and runs for about eight weeks. The courses ENG501 and ENG601 are taught in the autumn term, and courses ENG701 and ENG801 in the spring term.

Teaching

This is a fully online study programme. Most of the learning activities are asynchronous, while some sessions of discussion, cooperation and student activity are synchronous. Examples include lectures, group work via online conferences and discussion forum, digital learning resources and tasks, written and oral assignments, supervision and student organised study groups, and independent studies. The course requires systematic work with reading, tasks and exercises, and active participation in class. English is both the target language and the language of instruction, and all learning activities are in English. This offers invaluable language practice, and through active involvement in learning activities students will apply both language skills and knowledge of course content.

Assessment

Each course in the study requires different compulsory learning activities which have to be approved before the student is allowed to sit the exam.

The final assessment in each course: oral exam, assignment and home exam.
